In June 2023, millions of Americans experienced hazardous air conditions when massive Canadian wildfire smoke spread across much of the United States. More than 115 million Americans in 16 states were placed under hazardous air quality alerts as thick smoke and toxic haze covered major cities throughout the Northeast.
New York City recorded the worst air quality of any major city in the world, with the Air Quality Index reaching 484 on a scale where anything above 150 is considered unhealthy. Government officials urged residents to remain indoors, wear masks if they had to go outside, and avoid outdoor activities because prolonged exposure to the toxic smoke posed significant health risks.
